One of my favorite movies growing up was the original Ghostbusters. The special effects were state of the art for the times, and it hit that sweet spot of comedy and horror. I remember going to the drive-in with my grandfather to see Ghostbusters and then staying to see Gremlins. 1984, was a great summer for movies.

The sequels while both good and bad, never did hit that same mark for me the original did. Often sequels don’t tend to go over the same way first movie did. There are a few examples of sequels or trilogies that did, but for the most part the original is always the best.

Then flash forward to 2015. I hear they are rebooting Ghostbusters, with an all female team. It sounds good, but yet it doesn’t, for me anyway, come close to the original or the sequels. I realized this is because it didn’t have the same spark. It was like watching some alternate reality. Instead of building on what came before, what I remember was wiped away.

This last weekend I had the pleasure of preaching about the history of our church, but more importantly, I used 2 Timothy 1:3-7 to help us understand that we must:

  • Journey Together (vss. 3 and 4)
  • Remember and Honor the Past (vs. 5)
  • Boldly Go into the future (vss. 6 and 7)

Every so often we get caught up in trying to reboot Christianity or Church. We forget that what came before was an important part of our heritage. Yes, there were mistakes. Yes, some of the stuff was cheesy. No, we shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Let’s stand on the shoulders of our ancestors of faith and then go boldly into the future.
